Background of the Study
Anxiety disorders, characterized by excessive fear, worry, and apprehension, are among the most common mental health conditions affecting adolescents worldwide. In Nigeria, the prevalence of anxiety disorders among young people, particularly secondary school students, has been rising steadily. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges due to the stressors they face during their developmental years, such as academic pressure, peer relationships, and family dynamics. In Kano State, a large and diverse state in northern Nigeria, mental health issues among adolescents have been gaining increasing attention.
Recent studies suggest that anxiety disorders can significantly affect students' academic performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life (Aliyu et al., 2024). Despite the growing awareness of mental health issues, the prevalence of anxiety disorders in secondary schools in Kano State has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to assess the prevalence of anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State, identify the factors contributing to anxiety, and explore the impact of these disorders on students' academic performance and well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State pose a significant concern, with potential negative effects on students' mental health, academic achievement, and overall development. However, there is limited research on the prevalence of anxiety disorders in this group. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the extent of anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State and exploring the underlying factors contributing to the condition.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State.
2. To identify the factors that contribute to anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State.
3. To examine the impact of anxiety disorders on the academic performance and overall well-being of students in Kano State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State?
2. What factors contribute to anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State?
3. How do anxiety disorders affect the academic performance and well-being of students in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
1. A significant proportion of secondary school students in Kano State suffer from anxiety disorders.
2. Factors such as academic pressure, family issues, and peer relationships contribute significantly to anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State.
3. Anxiety disorders have a negative impact on the academic performance and overall well-being of secondary school students in Kano State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on assessing the prevalence of anxiety disorders among secondary school students in Kano State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting of anxiety symptoms and challenges in accessing comprehensive mental health data from schools.
